Reigning Africa 1500m champion Winny Chebet started off the season with a win at the 3rd Athletics Kenya Weekend Meeting held on Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
The 33 year-old who is making her transition to the road races, took charge of the race with 150m remaining as she accelerated her speed leaving Mary Nyaboke Ogwoka of Nyanza South and Daisilak Jerono who also comes from the Kenya Defense Force (KDF) gasping for air she held on to cross the line first in 4:15.10.
Winnie who was also using this weekend Meeting as part of her preparations for the upcoming Africa Championships, was closely followed by Ogwoka in 4:16.00 with Jerono wrapping up the podium three finishes in 4:17.27.
“I am Happy with today’s win. This is part of my preparation of defending my title at the upcoming Africa Championships” said Chebet.
Chebet who is based at the Rongai Athletics Club (RAK) under the stewardship coach Bernard Ouma, who was present at this event, was full of praise of her coach and the work that he has done and continues doing as he prepares her for the road transition.
“Winnie is running her last races on track and in the near future you will see her on the road,” said Ouma
