Reigning World Aids Day 10km champion, Viola Chemweno came and conquered once again in the City in the Sun in the women 10,000m race at the Athletics Kenya BingwaFest Nairobi Region held at the Nairobi West Prisons Ground on Thursday (06) in Nairobi.

Chemweno who came with no expectations of winning the final series title, traded carefully in the entire race as she ran among a deep and experienced field.

Chemweno who was being trailed by Diana Chepkemoi and Sharon Chepkemoito from the famous Lemotit Athletics Club, maintained her calm as they endured the torturous hot weather condition.

With one lap remaining to go, Chemweno took charge of the race and accelerated further dropping the two Chepkemoi’s to surge further and cross the finish line in a time of 34:38.8.

Chemwno who is also the Bomet Cross Country champion was followed in second place by Diana in 34:47.4 with Sharon wrapping up the podium in 35:00.5.

“I came to compete but never expected to win but am happy for lifting the Nairobi region title, though it was too hot,” said Chemweno.

Embu based Mary Mananu who led in lap five but couldn’t manage to hold the pace, came home in fourth with Fancy Chepkorir finishing in fifth in respective time of 35:22.3 and 35:31.6.
