Alejandro Ríos already has a world medal. The Spanish athlete secured bronze in the 800 meters at the Eugene World U-20 Championships after an impeccably run campaign, showing composure in every race and once again improving his personal best in the final: 1:46.25, the third-fastest Spanish performance of all time.

The athlete trained by Antonio Serrano returned to compete with immense character in a final where he faced several opponents who arrived with better personal best marks. Ríos not only held his own against the favorites, but finished third and earned a medal that confirms his tremendous progression. He had already demonstrated his form in the semifinals, where he ran 1:46.66, also a personal best at that moment.
The two frontrunners: gold and silver
Out in front, the gold went to the strong favorite, the Moroccan Imad Bouchajda, who prevailed in a spectacular 1:44.64. The silver went to the Australian Daniel Williams, the other leading title contender. The two were the only finalists to have previously dipped under 1:45.
The bronze for Ríos also carries significant historical weight. Twenty-six years after Antonio Manuel Reina’s medal at the 2000 World U-20 Championships in Santiago, Chile, Spain again stands on the world podium in the 800 meters at the youth level.
And Spain could celebrate the presence of a second athlete in the final as well. Alejandro Muñoz finished seventh, capping a historic performance for Spanish athletics: for the first time since Kingston 2002, two Spaniards contested a World U-20 final in the 800 meters.
