Total Fiasco in the 1500m: No Spaniards in the Final

August 24, 2026

In the men’s 1500-metre series at the European Championships in Birmingham, none of the three Spaniards managed to secure a place in the final, which will be held tomorrow in the afternoon session. In the first heat, Carlos Sáez was involved in a collision with an Irish athlete with 500 metres to go, an incident that left him with no chance of contending for the six fastest spots that grant access to the final. He finished in 3:55.49 and, despite the Spanish team’s appeal, he was not reinstated into the final, despite the precedent that emerged yesterday with Audrey Werro and Gabija Galvydytė in the 800 metres semifinals.

I’ve always been fascinated by the stories hidden behind a stopwatch, a finish line or a record-breaking performance. At Athletics News, I cover athletes, competitions and the moments shaping track and field, with a particular interest in the people and journeys behind the results.
