The 2019 World 1500m Champion, 1500m Timothy Cheruiyot stormed to victory in the men’s 800m race during the BingwaFest Nairobi Region Finals, held on Thursday (06) at the Nairobi West Prisons Ground in Nairobi.
The 29 year-old who was the senior most prison officer in entire competition, played a rabbit in the three and a quarter lap race mas he waited patiently for the right time to pounce. With 200m remaining to the finish line, the Senior Superintendent of Kenya Prison took charge of the race with a killer kick that no one could respond to, crossing the finish in 1:48.8 and was followed in second place by Kenya police’s Dominic Bargentuny in 1:49.5 with Brian Maasai sealing the podium in 1:49.7.
In the Women category Judy Kemunto took the honors in 2:05.3 and was followed in second place by Sheila Chepkirui in 2:07.3 with Jecinta Apese wrapping the podium in 2:08.5.
“This was my first time participating at BingwaFest and I feel good to have won at my home ground. In 2014 I ran at this track and was recruited here. This was a good opportunity for most athletes and it’s very encouraging for all of us,” said Cheruiyot.
