Shelly–Ann Fraser- Pryce to retire from running

Three time Olympic champion Shelly–Ann Fraser- Pryce has announced that she will hug her running spikes after the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 37 year-old who was the first 100m runner to individual medals in four consecutive Olympics Games, said she needs now time for her family.

While speaking to Essence.com, Fraser-Pryce who gave birth to her son in 2017 and went ahead to win the Olympic silver medal and a relay gold in 2020, said, “My son needs me, my husband and I have been together since before I won in 2008. He has sacrificed a lot for me.”

The six times world 100m champion is currently preparing for the Paris, which is slated to take place from July 26 to August 11, said her husband Jason Pryce whom they have been with for thirteen years and have a son Zyon are her priority for now as they have sacrificed a lot for her.

“We’re a partnership, a team, and it’s because of that support that I’m able to do the things that I have been doing for all these years,” she added. “I think I now owe it to them to do something else.”

At the Doha World Championships, she went into the history books as then the oldest woman to claim the 100m World title. She further solidified this achievement by winning the title again at the age of 35 in Eugene in 2022, 14 years after her initial Olympic gold triumph.

It is about “showing people that you stop when you decide. I want to finish on my own terms,” she said.
