Sheila Chepkirui wins New York City Marathon

Commonwealth Games 10,000m bronze medallist, Sheila Chepkirui stunned the defending champion Hellen Obiri at the New York City Marathon held on Sunday (03) in New York.

The 33 year-old who was making her debut at the race, pulled away from the defending champion Obiri in the final mile and continue to surge as she cut the tape in 2:24.35 with the latter coming home in second 15 seconds later.

Obiri who is the double world 5000m champion was looking to be the first repeat champion since Mary Keitany of Kenya who won three in a row from 2014-16.

The four times World champion, Vivian Cheruiyot made sure that the women podium belonged to Kenya when she sealed the podium three finishes a time of 2:25.21
