Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has banned Sarah Chepchirchir for four years for the presence of Presence/Use of Prohibited Substances (Testosterone) which is a breach of the World Anti-doping rules.
This will be the second ban for the 39 year-old who was first banned for four years on November 19, 2019, after abnormalities were found in her blood passport.
The test was conducted after she won the 2017 Tokyo Marathon. AIU thus backdated the ban to start in 2018, forcing the athlete to miss out on racing for years.
Before her ban, she represented Kenya twice in international competitions in 2011.
Two years later, she set a personal best record in the Paris 20km race covering it in 1:05.3.
Chepchirchir who has been served with the Notice of Allegation Issued, comes a week after the president of the World Athletics, Sebastian Coe visited the country on January 5.
While in Kenya, Coe, a double Olympic Gold medalist, spoke on Kenya’s doping menace with over 70 athletes suspended in 2023 after testing positive for banned drugs.
“What is the difference between our approach to Kenya and the approach that we took with Russia? Let me make this clear, these are two very different cases,” said Coe.
