World Road Running half marathon Champion Sabastian Sawe ran away with the 10km senior men’s title at the Kenya National Cross Country championships held on Saturday (02) at the Kenya prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru, Nairobi.
The 27 year-old took on big names that included the double world Cross Country champion Geoffrey Kamworor, former World U20 5000m champion, Benson Kiplagat, the 2018 National 5000m champion Samuel Chebolei and Gideon Rono.
Sawe who never crossed spectators eyes as a potential winner stayed behind the leading group as the race was controlled Kamworor and Chebolei who ran side by side.with one lap to go the young, Sawe emerged from the leading crowd to superbly pull away from Kamworor and Chebolei who could not respond to his powerful kick as he surged ahead in a lightning speed to cut the tape first in 28:38.3.
“I wanted to go Belgrade. Now that I have made it to the team my focus will be taking the senior title”, said Sawe.
Sawe who set a Kenyan national record in the one hour run at the Memorial Van Damme over the 21km, narrowly missing the world record, was followed in second place by Chebolei who pulled a 28:38.9 with Rono who was representing the Central Rift Region closing the podium three finishes in 28:41.9.
