Rober Alaiz has announced his retirement from professional athletics. The León native, one of the most media-visible and recognizable athletes on the national scene over the past fifteen years, puts an end to a career marked by standout performances, injuries, and an Olympic dream that never came to fruition.
Until 2015, Alaiz enjoyed his best years on the track, excelling especially in the 5,000 meters and the 3,000 meters steeplechase. His form made him one of the leading figures in Spanish distance running and a regular at the world’s biggest competitions. However, injuries shaped his career, and after several attempts to regain his peak level, he decided to switch to the marathon with the aim of reaching Olympic Games. He never managed to achieve it.
“For a long time I lived chasing a version of myself that always seemed a little bit further ahead,” he acknowledges in his farewell. After years trying to reconnect with his best sensations, the athlete admits that the time has come to close his professional chapter. “It got late too soon,” could sum up a career in which talent and expectations coexisted with too many obstacles.
Alaiz, however, does not want to stop running. His plan is to rekindle the childhood spark and enjoy athletics away from competitive pressure. “I want to do it again to help my club, for my friends and for all those people who have stood by me along this journey.” And he concludes: “Perhaps this isn’t the ending I imagined. But it’s the one I need today.”
