A major development in the Spanish middle-distance scene. Águeda Marqués, an Olympic finalist in the 1500 meters at Paris 2024, ends her sporting relationship with Arturo Martín and will begin a new phase with Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the renowned Norwegian coach who has elevated his children to the highest international level and is now doing the same with the Portuguese Patrícia Silva and Jose Carlos Pinto.
The news was disclosed by Fernando Miñana in El País and represents a radical shift in the career of a middle-distance runner who since the World Championship in Tokyo 2025 has barely been able to compete regularly due to a string of injuries. Ingebrigtsen, resident on the Costa del Sol for much of the year and who was acquitted of mistreating his children, will coach Águeda Marqués remotely as she relocates her residence to her native Segovia.
The middle-distance runner, who informed the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation last week, ends her relationship with Arturo Martín at the CAR in Madrid, with whom she had reached that magical final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and posted a personal best of 4:00.31 in the 1500 meters and 8:37.24 in the 3000 meters.
For the moment, there are no further details about this new arrangement nor about the event Marqués will focus on in the future, whether her preferred distances will be the 1500 meters or the 5000, to which she has often been linked in the past as an athlete whose aerobic capacities are more than proven. What is clear is Gjert Ingebrigtsen’s method, with large volumes of kilometers (close to 200 weekly), placing strong emphasis on mid-pace training (tempo or threshold) and training at altitude for a large part of the year, with recurring camps in Sierra Nevada and St. Moritz (Switzerland).
