The Cross Internacional de Itálica 2026 already has its first big name. Nadia Battocletti, one of the world’s best female distance runners and the current standout figure in European long-distance, will contest the women’s absolute race on the upcoming November 8. The Diputación de Sevilla thus opens up the configuration of the international lineup with an athlete capable of competing on equal terms with the great African specialists. Battocletti’s presence on the historic Santiponce circuit represents a clear statement of intent from the organizers. The Italian will arrive at Itálica with a collection of international medals that includes Olympic and World podiums, European titles on track, road and cross country, and several national records. Her participation will strengthen the sporting appeal of the women’s race and present a European alternative to the power that Kenyan and Ethiopian runners have traditionally exercised in major international cross-country competitions.
A direct rival for the great African distance runners
Battocletti has become in recent seasons one of the few European runners capable of challenging African dominance in long-distance events. Her progression reached a new dimension at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she took the silver medal in the 10,000 metres and finished fourth in the 5,000 metres final. The Italian athlete definitively confirmed her entry into the world elite during the Tokyo 2025 World Championships. There she earned silver in the 10,000 metres (only surpassed by the Kenyan Beatrice Chebet), with a national record of 30:38.23. She also climbed onto the podium in the 5,000 metres to take bronze. In the 10,000 metres final, Battocletti reached the last lap within the group contesting the title. Her late-race acceleration over the final 400 metres allowed her to stay alongside Chebet until the final metres and secure a silver that confirmed her ability to compete at the highest level in fast, tactical, sprint-resolved races. That competitive profile will have particular relevance in Itálica, a cross country where positioning, the capacity to respond to pace changes and endurance on demanding terrain are often decisive.
A cross-country-based career
Although her greatest recent successes have come on the track, a large part of Nadia Battocletti’s athletic development is rooted in cross country. The Italian has dominated virtually every category of the European Cross Country Championships. She was the under-20 continental champion in Tilburg 2018 and Lisbon 2019, and subsequently added two under-23 titles in Dublin 2021 and Turin 2022. In the senior category she won individual silver in Brussels 2023 before being crowned European champion in Antalya 2024 and defending the title in Lagoa 2025. That experience makes Battocletti a natural candidate to occupy top positions in Itálica. She will not arrive as a track specialist making an occasional cross-country foray, but as a runner trained in this discipline and accustomed to performing on technical courses with climbs, gradients and continuous changes of surface and pace.
One of Europe’s most complete athletes
Born on April 12, 2000 in Cles, in the Italian province of Trento, Battocletti grew up in a family intimately linked to athletics. She is the daughter of Jawhara Saddougui, a former Moroccan 800-metre runner, and Giuliano Battocletti, a former Italian distance and marathon runner who also acts as her coach. In addition to Olympic and World successes, she has European titles in the 5000 and 10,000 metres won in Rome 2024 and Birmingham 2026, as well as the gold in the 10 kilometres at the European Road Running Championships in Brussels-Leuven 2025. In 2026 she expanded her repertoire with the indoor 3000 metres world title won in Toruń. Her versatility is also reflected in her marks. Battocletti holds Italian records from 1500 to 10,000 metres, on both outdoor track and indoor track and on the road. Among her records stand 3:57.54 in the 1500 metres, 8:26.27 in the 3000, 14:23.15 in the 5000, 30:38.23 in the 10,000 and 30:08 in the 10 kilometres on the road. She also holds a European 5-kilometre road record of 14:32, another sign of a competitive ability that does not depend on a single distance or surface.
The first name on a lineup looking toward Europe
The confirmation of Battocletti opens the international roster for the 2026 edition. The Diputación de Sevilla thus bets on a runner with enormous sporting impact and on a showdown that could offer a differentiating argument for the women’s race. On November 8, Nadia Battocletti will return to a stage she knows and has competed on before. She will do so now from a very different position: crowned Olympic and World silver medalist, continental champion and a benchmark in European distance running who has found in the Italian her best answer to the great African powers.
