Nadia Battocletti, First Major Star Confirmed for the Itálica International Cross 2026

October 8, 2026

The Itálica International Cross 2026 already has its first big name. Nadia Battocletti, one of the world’s finest female distance runners and the current main reference in European long distance, will contest the women’s elite race on the upcoming November 8. The Seville Provincial Council thus opens up the international lineup with an athlete capable of competing on equal terms with the top African specialists. Battocletti’s presence on the historic Santiponce circuit represents a clear statement of intent from the organizers. The Italian will arrive in Itálica with a collection of international medals that includes Olympic and World podiums, European titles on track, road and cross country, and several national records. Her participation will strengthen the sporting appeal of the women’s race and present a European alternative to the power traditionally wielded by Kenyan and Ethiopian runners in major international cross country competitions.

A direct rival to the continent’s leading African long-distance runners

Battocletti has become in recent seasons one of the few European runners capable of challenging African dominance in long-distance events. Her progression reached a new dimension at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she won silver in the 10,000 meters and finished fourth in the 5,000 meters final. The Italian athlete definitively confirmed her entry into the world elite during the Tokyo 2025 World Championships. There she took silver in the 10,000 meters (only surpassed by Kenyan Beatrice Chebet), with a national record of 30:38.23. She also climbed the podium in the 5,000 meters to claim bronze. In the 10,000 meters final, Battocletti arrived on the last lap within the group contesting the title. Her acceleration over the final 400 meters allowed her to stay with Chebet until the final metres and secure silver, a result that confirmed her ability to compete at the highest level in fast, tactical races decided by a sprint. That competitive profile will be especially relevant in Itálica, a cross country where positioning, the ability to respond to pace changes, and endurance on challenging terrain are often decisive.

A career built on cross country

Although her most recent major successes have come on the track, much of Nadia Battocletti’s athletic development is rooted in cross country. The Italian has dominated virtually every category of the European Cross Country Championships. She was the under-20 continental champion in Tilburg 2018 and Lisbon 2019, and subsequently added two under-23 titles in Dublin 2021 and Turin 2022. Already at the senior level she earned individual silver in Brussels 2023 before being crowned European champion in Antalya 2024 and defending the title in Lagoa 2025. That experience makes Battocletti a natural candidate to occupy top positions in Itálica. She won’t arrive as a track specialist making an occasional foray into cross country, but as a runner trained in this discipline and accustomed to navigating technical courses with ascents, uneven surfaces, and continual changes of surface and pace.

One of Europe’s most complete athletes

Born on April 12, 2000 in Cles, in the Italian province of Trento, Battocletti grew up in a family closely tied to athletics. She is the daughter of Jawhara Saddougui, a former Moroccan 800-meter runner, and Giuliano Battocletti, a former Italian distance and marathon runner who also acts as her coach. Beyond Olympic and World successes, she has European titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters won in Rome 2024 and Birmingham 2026, as well as gold in the 10 kilometers at the European Road Championship in Brussels-Leuven 2025. In 2026 she expanded her repertoire with the world short-track 3000 meters title earned in Toruń. Her versatility is also reflected in her marks. Battocletti holds Italian records from 1500 to 10,000 meters, both on outdoor track as well as in indoor and road events. Among her records stand 3:57.54 for 1500 meters, 8:26.27 for 3000, 14:23.15 for 5000, 30:38.23 for 10,000, and 30:08 for 10 kilometers on the road. She also holds a European 5-kilometer road record of 14:32, another demonstration of a competitiveness that does not rely on a single distance or surface.

The first name on a lineup that looks toward Europe

The confirmation of Battocletti opens the international roster for the 2026 edition. The Seville Provincial Council thus bets on a runner with immense sporting impact and on a showdown that can offer a differentiating argument for the women’s race. On November 8, Nadia Battocletti will return to a stage she knows and has competed on before. She will do so now from a very different position: as Olympic and World silver medalist, continental champion, and a benchmark of European distance running who has found in the Italian her best answer to the great African powers.
