Lagos City Marathon to be held in February

This year’s Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, a World Athletic gold label race will be celebrating their 10th anniversary with a promise of pomp and glamour.

The race organisers, Nilayo Sports Management, who are the force behind the event, have promised that the 10th edition will witness a more friendly and hospitable in a celebration of athleticism.

“As we celebrate a decade of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, it is clear that this race is more than just a sporting event,” said Olopade.

“It is a movement that inspires health, fosters international camaraderie, and positions Lagos as a city to watch on the global athletics map,” she stated.

Athletes from powerhouse countries like Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda as well as participants from United States and other nations, will converge on Lagos to vie for glory on its vibrant streets.

According to Nilayo Sports, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which started in 2016, would continue to inspire participation, foster unity, and promote Lagos as a global sporting hub.

Last year, the World Athletics vice president, Jackson Tuwei, said that the body would consider giving the event a platinum label if they find it worthy after a thorough review of this year’s edition.

Kenyans have won this marathon from 2016, 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2024.

Last year the race was won by Bernard Sang from Kenya and Ethiopia’s, Kebene Chala.

The race course record for both men and women of 2:10.23 and 2:31.40 were set five years ago by Kenyans David Barmasai and Sharon Cherop.

Over 4,000 foreign runners and 100 elite athletes are expected to participate in this year’s edition that will be held in February 15, 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria.
