Kipkeino Classic heads back to Nyayo National Stadium

Published on

The fourth edition of the Kipkeino Classic, a Continental Gold Tour slated on April 20, 2024 will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium which has been put on hold from renovation.

This was said by the Sports Cabinet Secretary of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Ababu Namwamba during a meeting with the Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) Executive Committee members, led by their president, James Waindi, Secretary general, Moses Wakhisi, treasurer Mukami Wambora and executive members, Abuller Ahmed, Charity Wanja, Doreen Makhandia and Beki Mwamburi at Talanta Hela Plaza on Wednesday.

The CS said that construction for the stadium will delay for a minimum of six months due to a tight international calendar for sports events like the KipKeino Classic and Harambee Stars who have two International engagements against Gambia and Burundi.

“Kasarani stadium is a full blown construction site in preparations for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, hence we are left with no option but to use Nyayo Stadium in the meantime,” said Ababu.

KipKeino will be returning to Nyayo National Stadium, the venue which hosted the first edition in 2021 during the Covid-19 Pandemic, but for the following two editions it was moved to Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

Ababu also commended SJAK for being the best organized group of journalist with a responsible working programme; “We thank you for the fantastic job so far in reporting the various activities undertaken by this ministry. We are fully aware of your watchdog role, and recognize it as crucial for us to keep our focus of service to Kenyans in the straight and narrow,” he said.
