Rio Olympics silver medallist, Julius Yego will battle the Rio Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rholer at the fifth edition of the Kip Keino Classic, a World Athletics Continental Tour – Gold scheduled for Saturday 21, 2024 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
The 35 year-old who is also the 2015 World Javelin throw Champion and holds a personal best throw of 92.72 that he got in Beijing, will renew his rivalry with Rholer, who holds a life time throw of 90.30m that he set in 2016 when he narrowly missed the Olympic record of 90.57m set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Yego who is also the 2014 Commonwealth Games javelin champion was in high spirit after hearing that he will be facing the German who has been out of active action due to a series of injuries.
“I am excited for Rholer and I welcome him to Kenya. When I heard that he was coming for KipKeino I reached out to him and he was very excited to start his season over here. I feel quite excited and I am looking forward to a good competition against him. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us.” said Yego.
The two will also face-off with the reigning European Teams Championships silver medallist Timothy Herman, the 2014 World Junior Javelin champion Gatis Čakšs and the 2015 world javelin throw silver medallist, Ihab Abdelrahman of Egypt
Other title contenders include the 2018 Mediterranean U23 Champion, Manu Quijera, Jaroslav Jilek of Czech Republic and Alexander Kiprotich from Kenya.
