Estepona lived this Sunday a historic day with the inaugural edition of the Marathon and Half Marathon Estepona Jardin of the Costa del Sol, a rendezvous that gathered more than 1,700 runners from over 50 nationalities and transformed the city’s streets into a true celebration of sport.
The event drew a strong international response, but it also saw substantial local involvement, with more than 200 Estepona runners taking part in an inaugural edition that benefited from notable citizen participation along the entire course. The day also featured the presence of José María García Urbano, the mayor of Estepona, and the world champion Martín Fiz, ambassador of the race.
Juan Miguel Caravaca, first winner in the history
If there was a dream image for a first edition, it would have been hard to imagine a better one. The inaugural winner of the Estepona Marathon was precisely a local runner. Juan Miguel Caravaca crossed the finish line in first place and became the first athlete to place his name on the event’s honours list. Alongside him, the men’s marathon podium was completed by Roberto Alonso, in second, and Richard Price, in third.
In the women’s category, the victory went to Sonia Oncala, followed by Ciara Gaffney and Lucía Alfaro García.

A route to discover Estepona
One of the most appreciated aspects by participants was the course designed to showcase some of the city’s most representative spaces. With more than 23 kilometers along the sea and a prominent role for the Senda Litoral, the circuit allowed thousands of runners to enjoy a unique experience that blended sport, scenery, and the Mediterranean coast.
The debut of the Estepona Marathon leaves an unforgettable image: more than 1,700 runners, more than 50 nationalities represented, a strong local involvement, and a city fully devoted to its new major sporting event.
