Christopher Williams shatters World Indoor 400m Record

Canada’s Christopher Morales Williams shattered the world 400m Indoor record at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship (SEC) on Saturday (25) at the Randal Tyson Indoor track in Fayetteville, Arkansas, United Sates.

The 19 year-old who was a key member of Canada’s bronze medal-winning 4x400m team at the world U20 championships in Cali in 2022 and also took home the silver in the 400m at the Pan American U20 championships the following year, crashed Michael Norman’s 2018 collegiate record of 44.52 seconds, and Norman’s world record with a new World Indoor record of 44.49.

Williams also broke the previous school record of 44.75 seconds held by Elija Godwin in 2023, as well as Godwin’s meet record, Kerron Clement’s 2005 facility record of 44.57 seconds.

The new world record holder was followed by the 2022 World  4×400m relay silver medallist, JeVaughn Powell from Jamaica in 45.61 with Chris Robinson closing the podium three finishes in a season best of 45.62.

United States Jevon O’bryant finished in fourth in 46.42 with the 17 year-old Samuel Ogazi of Nigeria setting a new world U20 400 Indoor record of 46.56.
