Femke Bol breaks World Indoor 400m Record

Femke Bol stormed to another world record in the women 400m Indoor Games held on Sunday (18) at the Dutch Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.

The 23 year-old who opened her season with 49.69 in Metz at the start of this month, improved to 49.63 in Lievin and then took her heat in 50.55 in Apeldoorn on Saturday.

She proved that was the case on Sunday, cruising through 200m in the lead and then powering over the finish line in 49.24 to dip under 50 seconds indoors for the sixth time of her career so far.

Bol was followed by European 400m silver medallist, Lieke Klaver, who came in second place in a new personal best of 50.10 – a time that moves her to ninth on the world indoor all-time list.

Cathelijn Peeters – another member of their gold medal-winning team at the World Athletics Championships – closed the podium three finishes in 52.08.

“I never get used to it, especially with all these people cheering on home soil,” Bol said in her trackside interview. “It’s a dream come true to run another world record and it’s wonderful to have all these Dutch fans enjoying the most beautiful sport in the world.”

This was Bol’s last race before the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow from 1-3 March when she will be seeking success in both the 400m and 4x400m relay.
