Hawi Gejia smashes the Frankfurt Marathon course record

Former world 10,000m champion, Magdalyne Masai was beaten to second place by Hawi Feysa Gejia at the 40th edition of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon, on Sunday (27) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

The 34 year-old who became the World Junior Cross Country champion in 2007 and set a world junior record for the 10,000m at the 2008 Summer Olympics, placing fourth in the final, was beaten to second place by Ethiopia’s Gejia who crashed the old course record of 2:19.10 set five years ago by Valary Aiyabei from Kenya, with a new course record of 2:17.25, which is the 12th fastest time in the world.

Masai who was the race favorite also crossed the finish line inside the old course record in a new personal best of 2:18.58 with Shuko Genemo Wote of Ethiopia sealing the podium three places in 2:22.37.

The combined winning times of the women’s and men’s champions came to 4:23:19, the fastest aggregate time ever in the history of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon
