Kenya’s Gilbert Masai took the top honors in the men’s race at the 29th edition of the Palermo International Marathon held on Sunday (17) in Palermo, Italy.
The 34 year-old pulled away from the leading group at the 35km mark, tagging along his two compatriots, Nicodemus Kipkurui Kimutai and Peter Murithi Wahome. The three held on together as they traversed the beautiful scenes of the city center and the Parco della Favorita.
Gilbert and Kimutai pulled away from Wahome who was struggling as he could not keep up with the pace of the two as they surged further from him at the 39km point.

The two ran side by side for a kilomtre before Masai engaged his gear from the 41km mark, dropping Kimutai like a hot potato and surging ahead solo, to cut the tape comfortably in 2:14.09 with the latter coming home almost a minute later in 2:15.08. Wahome made sure it was a Kenyan podium affair as he wrapped it up in third in 2:15.12.
