World Indoor 800m silver medallist, Freweyni Hailu stormed to the fourth fastest indoor 1500m in history at the 10th edition of the Copernicus Cup held on Tuesday (07) in Torun, Poland.
The 22 year-old made sure that Ethiopian swept the podium as she led four women who went under the 4 minutes barrier.
Hailu now becomes the third fastest woman over the distance in her country after Gudaf Tsegay and Genzebe Dibaba.
Hailu who is also the World Road Running I mile silver medallist, pulled away from her compatriot the World 1500m silver medallist Diribe Welteji, in the final stages of the race and cutting the tape first in a World Leading time and personal best of 3:53.09.
“It’s a great time. I am very happy, but not completely surprised. I knew I could run fast,” said Hailu.
Welteji was forced to settle in second place in a new personal best of 3:55.47, a time that moved her to the fifth in the world all-time list. World Indoor bronze medallist, Hirut Meshesha wrapped up the podium three finishes in a life time best of 3:56.47.
Ethiopia’s Tigist Girma and the world 3000m steeplechase record holder, Beatrice Chepkoech finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 3:58.79 and 4:01.17 respectively.
