Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi beat Kamar Etyang in an exciting men’s 2km Loop Race at the tape at the third leg of Athletics Kenya Iten Cross Country Championships, on Saturday (2) at the Iten Sports Grounds in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The 20 year-old who is also the World 800m silver medallist, beat Etyang who is a 1500m specialist as the two took the race to the tape in a scintillating finish which Wanyonyi emerged victorious with the latter coming home in second as Phanuel Koech sealed the podium three places.
Wanyonyi cut the tape first 5:50.6 and was closely followed by Kamar in 5:51.0 with Koech finishing in third place in 5:54.3.
Ezekiel Tiepus and Levi Bichii finished in fourth and fifth in a time of 5:55.2 and 5:56.6 respectively.

Wanyonyi, Serem and Cherotich get automatic qualification to Tokyo25 after world athletics reverse its stance on the 2024 Diamond league winners. Chebet misses out as Kipyegon is the defending champion. Kipyegon qualified for 1500M and 5000M as a defending champion. Mary Moraa is qualified as the 800M defending champion.
