Kenya’s Edwin Kibet took the top honors at the 10th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, on Saturday (15) in Lagos, Nigeria.
The 37 year-old who arrived in Nigeria barely 24 hours before the race that left him with minimal time to rest after his journey, came to this race with a life time best of 2:08.17 that he got in 2015 at the Eindhoven Marathon, where he finished in fifth place.
Kibet who is the also the 2023 champion, showcased remarkable resilience despite jet lag, going into the history books as the second individual to win the race, when he cut the tape in a time of 2:14:19.
Kibet who led a Kenyan podium finish was followed in second place a distant later by Nehemiah Kipyegon in 2:16.37 with Bernard Cheruiyot sealing the podium in 2:17.17.
The race course record of 2:10.23, set five years ago David Barmasai from Kenya remains standing.
Kibet took home Kshs 6450000 ($50,000) as prize money.
