Kapataga based Maurine Chebor was on cloud nine after completing a double win at the First Athletics Kenya Cross Country Meet held at the Machakos Teachers College in Machakos, County.
Chebor who has graduated to the senior category after participating at this year’s Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Championships where she finished in 13th place in the Junior category race, won her first senior race on Friday at the Betika BigwaFest Race that was held at the same and ran away with a whooping Kshs 3000, 000 as prize money.
The 21 year-old who is coached by Emmanuel Kipkoech was once again the star of the day as she demolished an experienced field in the 10km Senior Women race that had Sandrafelis Chebet Tuei, Winnie Jeptarus and Esther Chemtai Kipkech.
Chebor cut the tape first in 36:22.9 and was followed in second place by Christine Njoki in 36:32.2 with the Kenya Defense Force, Kipkech, closing the podium three finishes in 37:13.7.
“Yesterday I ran 10km and I won 300,000 and today I have won the first Cross country of the season, am very happy for this win and will use the funds to help my parents,” said Chebor.
Tuei who was representing the Kenya Police Service and Jeptarus were forced to settle in fourth and fifth in respective time of 37:38.0 and 37:46.6.
