Christopher Morales Williams’ 400m indoor world record would not be ratified because of “an issue with the starting blocks”.
The 19-year-old Canadian ran 44.49 seconds at Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship (SEC) on February 25, 2024 at the Randal Tyson Indoor track in Fayetteville, Arkansas, United Sates.
According to reports emerging from the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, says the blocks did not comply with World Athletics regulations. However the Association said, external Morales Williams’ time will remain “an all-time world best”.
Williams was a key member of Canada’s bronze medal-winning 4x400m team at the world U20 championships in Cali in 2022 and also took home the silver in the 400m at the Pan American U20 championships the following year, crashed Michael Norman’s 2018 collegiate record of 44.52 seconds, and Norman’s world record with a new World Indoor record of 44.49.
Williams had also broken the previous school record of 44.75 seconds held by Elija Godwin in 2023, as well as Godwin’s meet record, Kerron Clement’s 2005 facility record of 44.57 seconds.
During the SEC games the teenager was followed by the 2022 World 4×400m relay silver medallist, JeVaughn Powell from Jamaica in 45.61 with Chris Robinson closing the podium three finishes in a season best of 45.62.
