Chebet, Kasait and Taye target women's 5k World Record

The reigning world cross country champion Beatrice Chebet will attempt to break the women’s 5k world record at the 25th edition of the Cursa dels Nassos road race, slated for December 31, 2023 in Barcelona.

The 23 year-old who is also the World 5000m silver medallist, will partner with her compatriot, the 2019 African Games 5000m bronze medallist Lilian Kasait as they seek to dethrone Ethiopia’s  Senbere Teferi world 5km record of 14:29 that she set two years ago in Germany.

The two Kenyans will also have an uphill task as they face the world 10, 000m bronze medallist, Ejgayehu Taye of Ethiopia, who holds the world 5000m record in women’s mixed race.

“We have made a very clear commitment to top-tier female representation. Having the podium from the last world championship in road athletics will establish us as a global reference in women’s sports,” stated David Escudé, the Sports Councilor of Barcelona City Council, during the race presentation press conference held at the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sports Museum in Barcelona.
