Bilbao Night Run Fest Opens Registration on November 24 with a 20,000-Participant Limit

October 23, 2026

The Bilbao Night Run Fest will open registrations for its 2027 edition on November 24, with an initial cap of 20,000 participants, compared to the 27,000 runners registered this year. This decision responds to the economic uncertainty facing the organization due to the absence of a main sponsor that would guarantee the resources needed to maintain the scale reached. The event has seen extraordinary growth in recent years, rising from 13,500 participants in 2023 to 27,000 in 2026, establishing itself as Bizkaia’s largest participatory sport event and ranking among the six federated races with the highest participation in Spain. However, this growth has not been matched by a corresponding increase in financial resources. With a production budget close to 700,000 euros, the organizers deem it necessary to proceed prudently and initially adjust the participant cap to the funding that can be guaranteed. “We have demonstrated that Bilbao has the capacity to host one of the country’s major popular races. Demand exists and we could continue growing, but we cannot commit to organizing a race of more than 27,000 participants without the necessary financial resources,” explain the organizers.

The continuity of the event on the World Athletics calendar is not guaranteed either. The organizers have two months to decide, a decision that could affect the arrival of foreign runners and Bilbao’s international projection.

The continuity on the World Circuit, in Jeopardy

The financial uncertainty also threatens one of the Bilbao Night Running Fest’s key assets: its presence on World Athletics’ international calendar. The organization has two months to decide whether it will be able to maintain its participation in the world circuit, a circumstance that could directly impact the event’s international standing and its ability to attract foreign runners. In 2026, the event brought together nearly 4,000 international participants from 76 countries, cementing Bilbao as a reference destination for sport tourism. “It has taken us many years to persuade thousands of foreign runners to choose Bilbao. Losing our place on the world circuit would be a significant setback for the race and for the city’s international projection,” warn the organizers.

More than 8 million euros in economic impact for Bilbao

The Bilbao Night Running Fest has become a significant economic engine for the city. The 2026 edition generated an estimated economic impact exceeding 8 million euros, directly benefiting hotels, restaurants, shops, transport, and other tourism-related services. Looking ahead to 2027, this economic return could be even higher thanks to the implementation of the new tourist tax, which would allow additional revenue from the overnight stays of thousands of runners and accompanying visitors who come to Bilbao for the race.

The initial reduction of 7,000 participants, equivalent to 26% of the 2026 quota, could have a negative impact on this economic footprint. Added to this is a potential decline in foreign runners if the event loses its status on the international calendar, with a corresponding drop in overnight stays and tourism tax revenue. In light of this situation, the organization considers it essential to strengthen collaboration between public institutions and the private sector, aiming to secure the sustainability of an event that not only generates economic activity and projects Bilbao internationally, but also, from 2027 onward, could contribute directly to increasing public revenue tied to tourism. (At present, institutional contributions do not reach 7% of the budget.) “We are not talking about funding a race, but about preserving an event that generates millions of euros of economic activity for Bilbao each year. We believe now is the time to deepen the involvement of institutions and work together to guarantee its future and prevent Bilbao from missing out on opportunities for growth in sport, tourism, and the economy,” say the organizers.

Registration opens on November 24

Despite this backdrop of uncertainty, the organizers reaffirm their commitment to staging the Bilbao Night Run Fest 2027, scheduled for Saturday, October 16. Registration will open on Tuesday, November 24. During the first 48 hours, runners who participated in the 2026 edition will have exclusive access to a special rate before the general opening. The initial limit of 20,000 bibs could be increased if sponsorship agreements and financial backing evolve to guarantee the resources required. “Our objective is to gather at least 27,000 runners and, in the coming years, surpass 30,000. Bilbao has the potential to achieve this, but we must implement changes that maintain the organizational level, safety, and international projection that this event deserves,” the organizers conclude. The future of the Bilbao Night Running Fest will be largely decided in the coming two months. A pivotal period to determine whether Bilbao can continue growing as one of the major international destinations for running, or whether a lack of funding will compel a reduction of the aspirations of one of its most populous sporting events.
