Beatrice Chebet smashes world 5km record

Double Olympic champion, Beatrice Chebet has once again gone into history books when she smashed the women 5km record at the Cursa Dels Nassos on the New Year’s eve in Barcelona, Spain.

The 24 year-old who is the reigning Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, ran the eleventh fastest time and became the first woman to run under 14 minutes mark on any surface.

Chebet who is also the double World Cross Country champion, crashed the the previous world record by 19 seconds, bettering the time run by Agnes Ngetich in January 2024. Chebet’s 5K performance also bested the world record on the track of 14:00.21 set by Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia in 2023.

Chebet was followed in second place by Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa Kumanda 29 seconds later with Uganda’s Belinda Chemutai sealing the podium in 14:36.

During the 2024 prefontaine classic, Chebet broke Letesenbet Gidey’s 10,000m world record of 29:01.03 to become the first woman to break the 29-minute barrier, running 28:54.
