Tsehay Gemechu banned for four years for doping

Published on

The 2019 Africa Games 10,000m champion Tsehay Gemechu from EThiopia has been banned by Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for four years for Use of a Prohibited Substance/Method (ABP case), which is a breach of the World Anti-doping rules.

The Ethiopian was provisionally suspended by AIU in November because of “abnormalities” in her biological passport.

After almost a yearlong investigation, the AIU concluded that there was “overwhelming evidence of some kind of blood manipulation”.

The 25 year-old ban will commence from November 30, 2023 and her results from 22 March 2020 until 30 November 2023 has been disqualified.

That includes her second place finish at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon, where Gemechu became just the eighth woman in history to go sub-2:17 over 26.2 miles.
