There is a huge difference between finishing a training session and finishing it well
When you prepare for a long-distance test, such as a marathon, you learn that not every kilometer carries the same value.
The early ones serve to build the base. The middle ones consolidate the work. But there is a moment, usually when you’ve been running for quite some time, in which the training changes completely: the legs begin to feel the accumulated effort, technique stops coming out automatically, and keeping the pace requires a lot more concentration than at the start.
It is precisely in those last kilometers that I try to extract more information from a shoe. I’m not only interested in how it responds when everything goes well; I want to know what happens when fatigue shows up and I still need to run with fluidity.
The ON Cloudmonster 3 Hyper have been my companions on some of those long runs that ended in one piece. Training sessions where the objective wasn’t simply to rack up kilometers, but to finish running fast when the body was already starting to negotiate with you.
The technology is there… but it doesn’t need to remind you constantly
Much of that sensation comes from how ON has built the midsole.
The upper layer incorporates Helion HF, a high-energy foam designed to maximize energy return and absorb impact with great efficiency. Beneath it lies a second, more solid Helion foam layer that provides stability and improves the overall durability.
Additionally, the CloudTec system remains one of the brand’s hallmarks. Its function is not solely to cushion, but to facilitate a smooth transition and a very dynamic footstrike, especially when the pace begins to rise.
The interesting thing is that all this work is carried out without resorting to a carbon plate.
ON Cloudmonster 3 vs ON Cloudmonster 3 Hyper
After publishing my analysis of the Cloudmonster 3, many runners will probably ask themselves the same question. The short answer would be that the Hyper doesn’t replace the Cloudmonster 3; the full comparison is quite a bit more interesting.
The Cloudmonster 3 seems to me an extraordinary everyday shoe. It is the one I would choose to go out running without paying too much attention to the clock, for those easy runs where the main objective is to accumulate kilometers while enjoying the stride. It has very generous cushioning, a pleasant transition, and a character that invites relaxed running, even when you end up speeding up almost without realizing it.
The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, on the other hand, shifts that balance slightly toward performance. It doesn’t lose comfort—it would be impossible to talk about the Cloudmonster family and not acknowledge that—but it offers a more immediate response when the training requires maintaining sustained paces over many kilometers.
I wouldn’t define it as a faster version of the Cloudmonster 3, but as a shoe designed for a different moment in training.
If the Cloudmonster 3 accompanies me for most of the week, the Hyper is the one I would choose when the plan calls for a long run with marathon-pace blocks or a tempo workout that truly leaves a mark.
