Spanish Track and Field in Mourning: Julieta Gallego Dies in Urda Accident

October 29, 2026

Spanish athletics is mourning the death of Julieta Gallego, a 24-year-old athlete who lost her life in the Urda rail accident in Toledo. Her club, AD Sprint of Madrid, has confirmed the news and extended its condolences to the athlete’s family, friends and teammates.

A specialist in long jump and sprint events, Gallego had turned 24 last October 9. Her best mark in the long jump was 5.90 meters, a record with which she finished fourth at the 2023 Spanish U-23 Indoor Championship. Although she resided in Germany, she remained linked to Spanish athletics and regularly competed in national competitions by clubs.

The Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) has also expressed its sorrow at the loss and has sent its support to the athlete’s loved ones and to AD Sprint. The club has announced also moments of silence in her memory. A piece of news that shocks Spanish sport and adds to the grief for the victims of the railway accident.
