The Ethiopians Lemi Berhanu, clocking 2:03:33, and Buze Diriba, at 2:16:11, the women’s course record, dominated this Sunday at the Amsterdam Marathon, on a flat course in a rainy and windy day. Berhanu, 32, whose marathon personal best had stood at 2:04:33 since January 22, 2016 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), posted a time of 2:03:33 in the Dutch capital, one minute faster than his previous best. With this victory, Berhanu broadens a résumé that also includes a 2016 win at the Boston Marathon, where he finished second in 2021, and triumphs in Zurich (2014), Dubai (2015), Warsaw (2015), Xiamen (2017), Mumbai (2023 and 2024), Prague (2024 and 2025), Beijing (2024 and 2025). Behind him, two Kenyans joined on the Amsterdam podium: Nicholas Kipkorir (2:03:39), second, and Patrick Mosin (2:03:58), third.
In the women’s category, Ethiopian dominance was complete. The victory went to Buze Diriba, 32, with a time of 2:16:10, a course record and a personal best, improving the 2:19:34 she set in Frankfurt in 2025. Second place went to Aynalem Desta (2:17:06) and third to Meseret Belete (2:18:05). For Diriba this is her third marathon win after Toronto (2023) and Frankfurt (2025).
