If you take care of your heart, your heart will take care of you. With that premise, the Spanish Heart Foundation launched the Heart Popular Race to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and to promote healthy lifestyle habits among the population.
This morning, in its seventeenth edition, the Heart Popular Race beat with renewed vigor, bringing together about 4,500 hearts in this festival of health and sport that is held in person on the Esplanade of Puente del Rey, in Madrid Río.
The earliest starters were the competitors in the sanctioned 10K. With a start and finish on the Esplanade of Puente del Rey, participants faced this classic route, featuring a rolling profile through Madrid’s green lungs, the Casa de Campo.
Miguel del Pozo (32:53), one of Madrid’s iconic figures in popular races, secured the men’s title, surpassing Borja Traseira and Pablo López Chaves. Meanwhile, in the women’s category, the winner was Segovian Lucía Lozano (40:53), ahead of Ainhoa Ruiz del Árbol and Sandra Díaz.
After the race, the non-competitive walk took center stage, returning to be a crowd-puller. For all ages, from grandparents to children, they all shared these 4.5 kilometers entirely inside the Casa de Campo. Because this shared heartbeat knows no barriers, neither age nor physical preparation. We can all move for our hearts.
And as healthy habits take root in childhood, there was no shortage of children’s races, which allowed the little ones to share this celebration with their families and earn a medal as a reward for their efforts.
The Heart Popular Race continues through tomorrow with the virtual race, which will enable hundreds of participants from all over Spain to join this shared heartbeat using their mobile phones, either via the official Heart Popular Race app or through sports apps such as Polar, Garmin, or Strava.
