Nairobi will host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, a historic decision for the sport. The Kenyan capital will become the first African city to host a World Athletics Championships, after prevailing over London, Rome, and Munich in the bidding process.
The choice acknowledges the enormous weight that athletics carries in Kenya and Nairobi’s proven track record in hosting major international competitions. The city has already hosted the 2021 World U-20 Championships and the 2017 World U-18 Championships, while the country has historically been one of the world’s athletics powerhouses.
The decision of the World Athletics Council, held in Budapest, also determined the host for 2031. It will be Munich, which will return as a World Championship host after Germany organised the 1993 Stuttgart and 2009 Berlin editions. The renovated Olympic Stadium will be one of the championship’s main venues. The calendar for the upcoming World Championships reads as follows: Tokyo 2025, Beijing 2027, Nairobi 2029 and Munich 2031. Nairobi’s selection also marks a significant step in the geographic expansion of World Athletics’ premier championship, which for the first time will bring its flagship event to the African continent.Ver esta publicación en Instagram
