World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum’s last hours before the tragic road accident have been traced by the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
The DCI has shed light on the final hours of Kiptum as they unravel a detailed timeline leading up to his untimely death that also claimed the life of his Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana.
According to the DC, Kiptum visited three locations just hours before he met his death, first he went to Talex Inn Restaurant Pub and Car Wash, Then moved to Well Irish Pub and Restaurant at Rupa Mall, and finally The Grand Miarmir Guest House, all situated along the Eldoret-Nairobi highway.
The DCI teams led by Head of Homicide, Martin Nyuguto have pieced together a timeline of Kiptum’s movements.
At exactly 9:12 PM, Kiptum, along with Hakizimana and Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei, the sole survivor of the crash, were seen at The Grand Miarmir Guest House.
Here, the trio enjoyed a meal, marking their last known location before the accident. They then departed the guest house at 10:25 PM, embarking on a journey towards Chepkorio, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kiptum’s training base.
The hours leading up to the accident have been under the detectives keen eye as they focused on the gap between 9 PM and the time of the accident at 11:30 PM.
The first reported findings suggest that the car veered off the road due to excessive speed, a factor seconded by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), which also confirmed that the vehicle had no mechanical defects prior to the accident.
