
Teresa Cherotich ran away with the women 10,000m race title at the first Athletics Kenya Track and Field Weekend Meeting held on Saturday (16) at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Langata, Nairobi.
The 17 year-old who hails from from Kericho and based at the Lemotit camp defied the the chilly morning weather to beat a deep experienced field as she took the honors in a time of 33:57.5 and was followed in second place with Mercy Chemutai of South Rift in 33:59.5 with another Lemotit protégé Mercy Chepkorir sealing the podium three finishes in 34:29.5.
“The weather was not good today but I am happy with my first track victory. Today’s race was to test preparedness for the new season and I am happy with my training so far,” Said Cherotich.
Cherotich has set her target for next season as plans to fight for a place in team Kenya for the Junior World Cross Country slated for 30 March in Belgrade, Serbia and World Under 20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru on 26th-31st August.
Ujenna’s Jane Wanja and Mufae’s Maria Wangari finished in fourth and fifth place in respective time of 36:28.9 and 39:23.2
