Freweyni Hailu to headline the women’s mile race in Ostrava

World Indoor 800m silver medallist Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia will headline the women’s mile race at the Czech Indoor Gala, the second leg of the World Indoor Tour Gold slated for today 30 January in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The 22 year-old who is also the World Road Running 1 Mile silver medallist will go head-to-head against her compatriot the World Indoor 1500m bronze medallist Hirut Meshesha.

Hailu also won the world silver medal in the mile at the World Road Running Championships in Riga and finished fourth in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympic Games in a time of 3:57.60 and at the World Championships in Eugene 2022 in 4:01.28. Hailu had previously won in the 1500m at the Golden Spike outdoor meeting in Ostrava in 4:04.20 in 2021. She holds an outdoor mile life time best of 4:14.79 that she got last year at Monaco Diamond League meeting.

The 22 year-old, Meshesha, set her mile outdoor personal best when she clocked 4:20.00 last year at the Bislett Games in Oslo.

The two Ethiopians will also have to get past the European Indoor 1500m champion, Elise Vanderelst from Belgium, European Indoor 1500m silver medallist, Claudia Bobocea from Romania, European U20 silver medallist in the 1500m and 3000m Sofia Thorgesen from Denmark and Czech Indoor 1500m record holder Simona Vrzalova.
