Hayle Berhanu runs the second fastest time in India

Ethiopia’s Hayle Lemi Berhanu defended his title at the 19th edition of the Tata Mumbai Marathon held on Sunday (21) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

The 29 year-old who holds a life time best of 2:04.33 that he got seven years ago at the Dubai Standard Chartered Marathon, where he took the silver medal, lived to the race expectations as he cut the tape with the second fastest time in India of 2:07.50, missing out on his own course record by 18 seconds.

Berhanu who rose to international prominence with a notable victory at the 2016 Boston Marathon, where he outpaced the race favorites and secured a significant win after beating defending champion and fellow Ethiopian, Lelisa Desisa, led a 1-2-3 Ethiopian finish as he was followed a distant later in second place by Haymanot Alew in 2:09.03 with Mitku Tafa wrapping up the podium three finishes in 2:09.58.

In the women category Ethiopia’s Aberash Minsewo clinched the top spot in a time of 2:26.06 and was followed by her compatriots Muluhabt Tsega in second with Medhin Bejene closing the podium three places.
